Welcome to Year 5

In Year 5 class, we are thrilled to have you here as you begin your adventure in Upper Key Stage 2. This year, you’ll be developing lots of exciting skills, including deepening your problem-solving abilities and enhancing your creative thinking. We expect all students to embrace a positive attitude towards learning, showing curiosity, kindness, and a willingness to try new things. Let’s make this year a fantastic journey of growth and discovery!

Our day

Mornings generally consist of English and Maths lessons broken into different focus areas e.g. spelling; grammar and punctuation; reading comprehension; writing for English.  For maths, there will be an arithmetic focus session as well as a longer maths lesson following the White Rose overview.

Morning Break: 10:30 – 10:45 followed by snack time

Lunchtime: 12:15 – 13:15

Afternoon sessions comprise of one or two foundation subjects such as art, music, French, RE, geography, history, PE, PSHE, DT or science.

Homework & Reading

Homework Sent: Monday

Due: Following Monday

In Year 5, homework will consist of a variety of activities designed to enhance learning. Writing tasks will primarily concentrate on spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPaG), alongside arithmetic exercises in maths. Additionally, there will be opportunities to engage in problem-solving and reasoning. From time to time, projects linked to our foundation subjects may also be assigned. Each child will receive a homework folder for taking assignments home and returning them to school; please ensure this folder is kept safe. We recommend that children complete their homework early, and they are always welcome to bring it into school if they need any help.

Reading: Minimum 4 times per week – please record in reading logs
