WELCOME TO YEAR 2
Welcome to – Year 2 Pippin Class
In Pippin Class we have a caring, nurturing environment, where we value kindness and respect each other’s differences. Our learning environment is sometimes cooperative and lively and at other times more formal, quiet and independent.
During year 2 we develop our independent learning skills becoming learners who are positive and focused, learners who give things a go, learn from our mistakes and persevere when things go wrong.

Our day
Mornings generally consist of English and Maths lessons broken into different focus areas e.g. spelling; grammar and punctuation; reading comprehension; writing for English. For maths, there will be an arithmetic focus session as well as a longer maths lesson following the NCETM overview.
Morning Break: 10:15 – 10:30 followed by snack time
Lunchtime: 12:15 – 13:15
Afternoon sessions comprise of one or two foundation subjects such as art, music, French, RE, geography, history, PE, PSHE, DT or science.
Homework & Reading
Homework Sent: Tuesdays
Due: Following Tuesday
Homework will consist of phonics or spelling activities. The children will have a plastic wallet with their sheet/sheets in to complete sometime during the week. Children can return this at any time – there is a tray in the classroom for the homework once complete.
Reading: Please read with your child as much as possible. Sometimes it’s not possible to read every day, so we ask for 4 reads a week as a minimum to be signed by an adult in
the reading log. This is checked every Monday – stars and house-points are awarded, and the total reads are added up which go towards our reading challenge prizes.
Daily Essentials
- Water bottle with water only
- Reading book & log
- PE kit (Mon & Wed)
- Coat or hat (weather dependent)
- Book Bag (no rucksacks please – we don’t have enough space)
Assemblies:
Our celebration assembly will be on a Thursday at 2.45pm to which you are all invited. We will let you know in advance if your child has received a star of the week certificate so that you could make arrangements to attend if you would like to. Please also let us know if your child has achieved anything outside of school (however small) so we can celebrate this too.
PE kits:
PE lessons are on a Monday and a Tuesday. Please make sure that your child brings their PE kit to school and keeps it at school on their peg in a drawstring type PE bag or carrier bag. For practical reasons it is unhelpful to put PE kit in a rucksack as they take up too much room on their peg. Please bring in spare socks or tights, as they get very wet during the winter months on wet grass.
