Merriott Primary School

Phonics

At Merriott Primary School, we teach word reading from the beginning of Reception using the Read Write Inc. Phonics scheme.  Children quickly learn sounds and how to blend those sounds into words in order to get them off to a good start on their reading journey.  Please see our progression in phonics and word reading for more information about how and when this is taught.

As a progressive school, we aim to use the very best, evidence-based research to inform all of our decision making, and reading is no exception. ‘There is very extensive evidence to support the use of a systematic phonics programme with pupils in Key Stage 1’ – Education Endowment Foundation: Improving Literacy in Key Stage 1 Guidance report, 2021.

Dame Ruth Miskin’s Read Write Inc. Phonics whole school approach to literacy gets every child reading, writing and talking – whatever their background or need.  If you would like to learn more about the Read Write Inc approach to phonics please follow this link, ‘Parents’ guide to Read Write Inc. Phonics’ and look at our parent booklets linked below.

We have highly skilled reading teachers who are all trained to teach reading through the Read Write Inc. Phonics scheme.  This programme gives teachers the opportunity to teach in small groups whereby children are taught sounds, words, spelling and all children’s reading is listened to and improved every day.

It is vital that children have a chance to practise what they have learnt at home with parents.  We are pleased to share with interactive films using the buttons below for each sound that you can watch with your child at home in addition to the books that they will bring home as they move through the scheme after their initial sounds learning.
