History
Intent
At Merriott Primary School we aim to provide a rich and engaging history curriculum which will deepen knowledge, develop skills and show effective progression within the subject for all year groups, promoting lively and enquiring minds. We encourage our children to examine the past, relevant to their age and understanding of the world, through the medium of historical enquiry and the use of practical resources and evidence. The long-term curriculum journey includes historical knowledge and understanding of local, national and global significance.
Our ambition at Merriott Primary School is to produce confident historians, who question their own understanding of concepts and the period they are studying and are able to create links throughout their academic career to previously studied topics, as well as their own lives today.
As in all topics, the teaching builds on prior learning and allows for revisiting of topics but at a greater depth, thus enabling a clear progression of knowledge and understanding over their primary education.
A Year Six child will leave Merriott Primary School inspired by History and with a clear understanding of how it has shaped the world we live in. Children will be able to talk with clarity and give detailed accounts of major events within the eras that they have studied. They will be able to compare and contrast different periods in history and have knowledge of where some of these may belong on a timeline.
Implementation
Our history curriculum is guided and overseen by the history curriculum leader, who regularly monitors, evaluates and reviews the learning and teaching through book reviews, pupil interviews, subject audits and learning walks.
The National Curriculum and Early Years Foundation stage statutory frameworks provide the basis for our curriculum.
