French
Learning a foreign language is part of the primary National Curriculum and is a requirement for all children within key stage 2 (KS2). At Merriott and Haselbury Primary Schools Federation we teach French across KS2.
Research shows that learning a second language boosts problem-solving, critical-thinking, and listening skills, in addition to improving memory, concentration, and the ability to multitask. Children proficient in other languages also show signs of enhanced creativity and mental flexibility.
At a personal level, the more languages a person speaks, the better access they will have to different people and resources from other countries and cultures. Additionally, it helps children to better understand other cultures, expressions and styles of communication.
Our aim is to develop the confidence and competence of each child in the foreign language they are learning. Our goal is for them to be passionate, curious and confident about their own foreign language learning abilities when they finish the primary school phase of their education.
We will help them develop and demonstrate substantial progress in the 5 key language skills necessary for learning French
- Speaking
- Listening
- Reading
- Writing
- Grammar
We use the resource Language Angels to support planning our teaching in French.
